The Leader of the Future
Those who want to become leaders in the future will need to have a certain set of characteristics in order to qualify to lead the generations that follow. In the past, it was believed that those in leadership or manager positions should be “alpha dogs.” Aggressive, powerful men and women that have been taking charge since they were in grade school.
However, that ideology is starting to change. The rising generation of leaders will not necessarily be the alpha dogs, but will often be selected from a “beta” group, those who are great communicators and collaborators. The leader of the future will still be an inspirer, someone whom others want to follow because he motivates them, but he will not necessarily always be the take-charge, my-way-or-the-highway sort of leader. Here are some of the qualities that all future leaders will need to have.
1. Willing to collaborate. Few of the future’s workers are going to enjoy working in a position where they feel their ideas and contributions are not being heard by the higher-ups. The leaders of the future will need to be willing to listen to the suggestions and ideas of his employees, realizing that this is often the best way to get the best work done.
2. Checks his ego at the door. Those in leadership positions will have to be especially aware of their bias and ego, not just when working with their teams, but in making decisions and gauging progress.
3. Creates a culture where success and failure are shared. Instead of blaming or rewarding a single person when many were to blame, the successful leadership of the future will ensure that all those who were involved in a triumph are rewarded for it and that failure is not pinned to a single person, but used as a learning experience for all involved.
4. Be adaptable. Every industry is in constant flux. This will only continue to be true as technology and innovations improve. This means that someone in a leadership position will have to be ready to make a 180 degree turn and take his team with him, sometimes overnight. Being able to adapt to changes, big or small, without grinding to a halt, will be an important skill to have.
5. Able to see the value of each person and the team as a whole. Future managers will need to understand that when hiring individuals, those individuals need to fit into the team dynamic. It will not be enough to hire just anyone, but to hire someone who meshes well with the rest of the team.
Becoming this kind of leader and preparing to become this kind of leader may seem difficult. A coach who understands the needs of the future business environment can help.
